Day 1

Diarrhea, really Gustav, really? Never had a problem with diarrhea for the first 7 months of your life, and you decide to have it on the first day of our big trip? We didn't even make it to security at the Atlanta airport before we saw the poop explosion on the stroller!

And he has the worst case of diaper rash that we have ever seen. He's had a red butt a couple of times before that went away the next day after applying vaseline. But his butt is red and really sore, and he screams every time we wipe him. We fortunately had 2 sample packets of Lansinoh diaper creme that seemed to work well and didn't sting him.

Other than the frequent diaper changes, he was great. We started our journey by leaving the house at 4am. We had 3 legs of the journey: 2 hours flight to Chicago; 3 hours layover in Chicago; 13 hours flight to Narita, Japan; 5 hours layover in Japan; 7 hours flight to Bangkok. 30 hours of travel time!!!

I'm so glad we have the travel system. Checking in and going through security was a breeze. Having the stroller actually got us to the front of the line at security. And they were really nice about us having water for the formula.

Flight to Chicago: B+ (had to subtract for the numerous diaper changes!). He got a cup and was quite happy playing with it. Upon landing, a biker-ish looking passenger passed us and told us that we have a beautiful baby.

He was so talkative on the plane and in the Chicago airport! It was like he was so happy to experience all this new stuff and he wanted to tell us all about it.

Flight to Japan: A- and this was the long one! We sat in the bulkhead row (no place under the seat for our carry-on but more leg room) because that was where they provided a bassinet. There were 4 seats and the other couple had an 8 months old named Audrey.

At the end of the flight, the couple called Gustav an "angel" and the woman behind us just loved talking to him. Kudos to Gabe for being a baby whisperer who could get Gustav to sleep!

I really prefer traveling internationally on Japanese airlines because they know how to do customer service. The flight attendants greeted the baby by bringing him lots of toys and they checked on us often. He especially loved the JAL puppet!

When we landed in Japan, a crew came on-board to scan us for high temperatures indicative of swine flu. Like my cousin warned me, it was like a scene out of E.T.

Flight to Thailand: C-
Normally this is the point where we hit the wall after traveling for so long and we just crash. However, we couldn't do that with a baby who thought it was his normal waking time. Gabe and I were so exhausted and I could barely keep my eyes open. Gabe was a trooper and took care of the baby for the first 4 hours while I was passed out.

Gustav was really fussy and the flight was full of Japanese hipsters, business people, generally people without kids. We did not make any friends on this leg.

Jay was waiting for us the minute we stepped off the plane. He had arrived from accompanying his wife Gai on her Malaysian business trip and just waited for us at the airport. He smiled immediately upon seeing Gustav. His first comment was that Goose was kinda funny looking, but he'll grow up to be very handsome. Jay...the master of the back-handed compliment.
